Former investment bank FX trader: news trading and second order thinking
Thanks to everyone who responded to the previous pieces on risk management. We ended up with nearly 2,000 upvotes and I'm delighted so many of you found it useful. This time we're going to focus on a new area: reacting to and trading around news and fundamental developments. A lot of people get this totally wrong and the main reason is that they trade the news at face value, without considering what the market had already priced in. If you've ever seen what you consider to be "good" or "better than forecast" news come out and yet been confused as the pair did nothing or moved in the opposite direction to expected, read on... We are going to do this in two parts. Part I
Why use an economic calendar
How to read the calendar
Knowing what's priced in
First order thinking vs second order thinking
Knowing how to use and benefit from the economic calendar is key for all traders - not just news traders. In this chapter we are going to take a practical look at how to use the economic calendar. We are also going to look at how to interpret news using second order thinking. The key concept is learning what has already been ‘priced in’ by the market so we can estimate how the market price might react to the new information.
Why use an economic calendar
The economic calendar contains all the scheduled economic releases for that day and week. Even if you purely trade based on technical analysis, you still must know what is in store. https://preview.redd.it/20xdiq6gq4k51.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=6cd47186db1039be7df4d7ad6782de36da48f1db Why? Three main reasons. Firstly, releases can help provide direction. They create trends. For example if GBPUSD has been fluctuating aimlessly within a range and suddenly the Bank of England starts raising rates you better believe the British Pound will start to move. Big news events often start long-term trends which you can trade around. Secondly, a lot of the volatility occurs around these events. This is because these events give the market new information. Prior to a big scheduled release like the US Non Farm Payrolls you might find no one wants to take a big position. After it is released the market may move violently and potentially not just in a single direction - often prices may overshoot and come back down. Even without a trend this volatility provides lots of trading opportunities for the day trader. https://preview.redd.it/u17iwbhiq4k51.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=98ea8ed154c9468cb62037668c38e7387f2435af Finally, these releases can change trends. Going into a huge release because of a technical indicator makes little sense. Everything could reverse and stop you out in a moment. You need to be aware of which events are likely to influence the positions you have on so you can decide whether to keep the positions or flatten exposure before the binary event for which you have no edge. Most traders will therefore ‘scan’ the calendar for the week ahead, noting what the big events are and when they will occur. Then you can focus on each day at a time.
Reading the economic calendar
Most calendars show events cut by trading day. Helpfully they adjust the time of each release to your own timezone. For example we can see that the Bank of Japan Interest Rate decision is happening at 4am local time for this particular London-based trader. https://preview.redd.it/lmx0q9qoq4k51.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c6e9e1533b1ba236e51296de8db3be55dfa78ba1 Note that some events do not happen at a specific time. Think of a Central Banker’s speech for example - this can go on for an hour. It is not like an economic statistic that gets released at a precise time. Clicking the finger emoji will open up additional information on each event.
How do you define importance? Well, some events are always unimportant. With the greatest of respect to Italian farmers, nobody cares about mundane releases like Italian farm productivity figures. Other events always seem to be important. That means, markets consistently react to them and prices move. Interest rate decisions are an example of consistently high importance events. So the Medium and High can be thought of as guides to how much each event typically affects markets. They are not perfect guides, however, as different events are more or less important depending on the circumstances. For example, imagine the UK economy was undergoing a consumer-led recovery. The Central Bank has said it would raise interest rates (making GBPUSD move higher) if they feel the consumer is confident. Consumer confidence data would suddenly become an extremely important event. At other times, when the Central Bank has not said it is focused on the consumer, this release might be near irrelevant.
Knowing what's priced in
Next to each piece of economic data you can normally see three figures. Actual, Forecast, and Previous.
Actual refers to the number as it is released.
Forecast refers to the consensus estimate from analysts.
Previous is what it was last time.
We are going to look at this in a bit more detail later but what you care about is when numbers are better or worse than expected. Whether a number is ‘good’ or ‘bad’ really does not matter much. Yes, really. Once you understand that markets move based on the news vs expectations, you will be less confused by price action around events This is a common misunderstanding. Say everyone is expecting ‘great’ economic data and it comes out as ‘good’. Does the price go up? You might think it should. After all, the economic data was good. However, everyone expected it to be great and it was just … good. The great release was ‘priced in’ by the market already. Most likely the price will be disappointed and go down. By priced in we simply mean that the market expected it and already bought or sold. The information was already in the price before the announcement. Incidentally the official forecasts can be pretty stale and might not accurately capture what active traders in the market expect. See the following example.
An example of pricing in
For example, let’s say the market is focused on the number of Tesla deliveries. Analysts think it’ll be 100,000 this quarter. But Elon Musk tweets something that hints he’s really, really, really looking forward to the analyst call. Tesla’s price ticks higher after the tweet as traders put on positions, reflecting the sentiment that Tesla is likely to massively beat the 100,000. (This example is not a real one - it just serves to illustrate the concept.) Tesla deliveries are up hugely vs last quarter ... but they are disappointing vs market expectations ... what do you think will happen to the stock? On the day it turns out Tesla hit 101,000. A better than the officially forecasted result - sure - but only marginally. Way below what readers of Musk's twitter account might have thought. Disappointed traders may sell their longs and close out the positions. The stock might go down on ‘good’ results because the market had priced in something even better. (This example is not a real one - it just serves to illustrate the concept.)
We know that interest rates heavily affect currency prices. For major interest rate decisions there’s a great tool on the CME’s website that you can use. See the link for a demo This gives you a % probability of each interest rate level, implied by traded prices in the bond futures market. For example, in the case above the market thinks there’s a 20% chance the Fed will cut rates to 75-100bp. Obviously this is far more accurate than analyst estimates because it uses actual bond prices where market participants are directly taking risk and placing bets. It basically looks at what interest rate traders are willing to lend at just before/after the date of the central bank meeting to imply the odds that the market ascribes to a change on that date. Always try to estimate what the market has priced in. That way you have some context for whether the release really was better or worse than expected.
Second order thinking
You have to know what the market expects to try and guess how it’ll react. This is referred to by Howard Marks of Oaktree as second-level thinking. His explanation is so clear I am going to quote extensively. It really is hard to improve on this clarity of thought: First-level thinking is simplistic and superficial, and just about everyone can do it (a bad sign for anything involving an attempt at superiority). All the first-level thinker needs is an opinion about the future, as in “The outlook for the company is favorable, meaning the stock will go up.” Second-level thinking is deep, complex and convoluted. Howard Marks He explains first-level thinking: The first-level thinker simply looks for the highest quality company, the best product, the fastest earnings growth or the lowest p/e ratio. He’s ignorant of the very existence of a second level at which to think, and of the need to pursue it. Howard Marks The above describes the guy who sees a 101,000 result and buys Tesla stock because - hey, this beat expectations. Marks goes on to describe second-level thinking: The second-level thinker goes through a much more complex process when thinking about buying an asset. Is it good? Do others think it’s as good as I think it is? Is it really as good as I think it is? Is it as good as others think it is? Is it as good as others think others think it is? How will it change? How do others think it will change? How is it priced given: its current condition; how do I think its conditions will change; how others think it will change; and how others think others think it will change? And that’s just the beginning. No, this isn’t easy. Howard Marks In this version of events you are always thinking about the market’s response to Tesla results. What do you think they’ll announce? What has the market priced in? Is Musk reliable? Are the people who bought because of his tweet likely to hold on if he disappoints or exit immediately? If it goes up at which price will they take profit? How big a number is now considered ‘wow’ by the market? As Marks says: not easy. However, you need to start getting into the habit of thinking like this if you want to beat the market. You can make gameplans in advance for various scenarios. Here are some examples from Marks to illustrate the difference between first order and second order thinking. Some further examples Trying to react fast to headlines is impossible in today’s market of ultra fast computers. You will never win on speed. Therefore you have to out-think the average participant.

I’ve been looking for a broker that has an API for index futures and ideally also futures options. I’m looking to use the API to build a customized view of my risk based on balances, positions, and market conditions. Searching the algotrading sub I found many API-related posts, but then when I actually read them and their comments, I found they’re often lacking in real substance. It turns out many brokers or data services that have APIs don’t actually support index futures and options via the API, and instead they focus on equities, forex, or cypto. So here’s the list of what I’ve found so far. This isn’t a review of these brokers or APIs and note that I have a specific application in mind (index futures and futures options). Perhaps you’re looking for an API for equities, or you just want data and not a broker, in which case there may be a few options. Also, I’m based in the US so I didn’t really look for brokers or platforms outside the US. If you have experience with these APIs, please chime in with your thoughts. Also, I may have missed some brokers or platforms. If I did or if you see anything that needs correction please let me know.
Broker with a variety of platforms including CQG, Rithmic, TT, some with APIs
Wow, this list grew longer than I originally thought it would be. If you spot a mistake, please let me know and I’ll correct it. Edit: - added Lightspeed API - updated Dashprime to indicate some of the APIs available - added Medved Trader to table - added marketstack to table

I tried to build an algorithm based on VP's method from No Nonsense Forex. I got so far and almost completed the entire puzzle but when I backtested the strategy it turned out to be a complete disaster. I have a lot of indicators that do work for volume and exit points. However, the main baseline (entry indicator) completedly backfired. I am looking for people to collaborate or openly share what indicator they use and perhaps I could share some of my findings too. For people who have reasonable success using their algorithm please feel free to advise. Thank you!

Picking an online broker for investing for a non-US Non-EU investor
I live in Turkey and picked up an interest in investing to be able to feel financially safe and hopefully free in the future, two years ago. I picked a couple of divident paying stocks and bought small amounts. I also picked a couple of funds and invested even smaller amounts to see how they perform. One thing I noticed is that, the market is not likely to beat the inflation (if it can, it will be barely - and statistics are not very reliable at the moment), and nobody in the country remembers a period where USD lost power to Turkish lira in a persistent way, but we are seeing the reverse right now. This is so obvious and certain for most of our people that just buying USD alone is an investment form which will not fail you. Obviously unless I happened to pick up the stocks that will constantly outperform the whole market, it's unlikely that I gain a financial freedom in this way. And I can't do day trading or short term investment because I can't sit in front of a screen and monitor the market. Also, dividends are not reliable as a company might decide to skip a year or stop paying it altogether. And the divident performance of the whole market is around 1%. So, I don't feel like this environment is the right one for long term investment. That's why I am planning to invest in the US and maybe the UK stock markets. There are a couple of banks that let me invest in those markets, but their commission rates are insane. The minimum they will get for one transaction is $25. I was planning to start with something like $250-300 and if I invest with them, there goes one-tenth of my money. However, transferring money to a foreign account costs 40-50 Turkish liras, which roughly translates to $7-8. Considering that I'm planning to put small amount of money and buy stocks with it, transferring money to a broker makes sense. However this arises safety issues as I'm going to invest with an American or British broker. Moreover it will have to be an online broker because others don't accept foreigner investors. Risk increases. While I was doing research, I learnt that Saxobank, Tradestation Global and Interactive Brokers accept Turkish citizens. I can't pick Saxobank as they have a minimum of $10,000 which I won't have for a while. I checked them out to see if they are safe, but apart from obvious advertisement websites, it is very confusing. For instance, https://www.forexpeacearmy.com/forex-reviews/165/tradestation-stock-broker and https://www.forexpeacearmy.com/forex-reviews/165/tradestation-stock-broker They both are slammed here. But check this out: https://www.tradingview.com/brokeTradeStation/reviews/ Here, where the company can answer, there is a different story: https://www.trustpilot.com/review/interactivebrokers.com This one is another: https://www.trustpilot.com/review/tradestation.com?languages=en So, what are your thoughts about these two brokers? Are there any alternatives I am missing? Or should I just not invest in these markets? EDIT: I'm also worried about inactivity fees as I plan to buy and forget whether stocks or funds.

Craziest true story you've ever read, can almost guarantee.
I want to start this off by stating that this is really personal & my mind jumps all over the place when I talk about the whole situation, so pardon me if I ramble or forget some details. Please also try to understand the circumstances. My father used to work in the Alberta oil fields, in 2015 he got engaged & started working in our province so he could be home every night. Shortly after his return, an old friend of ours stopped by and they were catching up on old times when he told my dad that he was trading on the Forex market. This friend (let's call him Matt) bet my dad that if he gave him $500 he would be able to double it in a month, skeptical but with nothing to lose my dad agreed and sure enough later Matt came back with a cheque for around $1,000. We were all shocked & surprised and so they set up a deal where my dad would give him however much money and Matt would take a percentage of it as compensation which was perfectly fine. A year goes by and both Matt & my dad have earned a lot more money, my father was moving more from the "investments" than he was making at his job, around that same time my dad started having relationship issues & temporarily moved into a house with Matt & I would go over on weekends and watch Matt trade, it was fascinating and I wanted to learn how to do it. Not long after moving in, Matt tells my dad that he's officially opening his own investment firm, got all the proper licenses, and was going to start trading for other people & asked my dad if he would be interested in a "sales" position in which he would pitch the whole idea to potential clients, now aside of all of this my dad was working a very labor intensive job which was killing his back, he was making more from his investments than work, and the position he was offered paid $50,000 per month so he agreed. So it started off slowly with close friends and family, the minimum investment was $500 for 3 months & there were 2 different plans you could choose from no matter how much you chose to invest, you could opt for a plan that would pay you back your initial investment if it was lost but the company would take a larger percentage of the earnings, or you could use plan 2 which was more aggressively traded & earned more money however if the money was lost then you would not receive anything in return. I had invested $500 of my own money for 3 months and ended up with $1200, there were some people who were cashing out $100,000 cheques and word got around and there was a huge surge of people investing their money. Everything was smooth sailing, everyone was getting paid and personally our family was doing extremely good. My dad was now making $600,000/yr plus his investments which added another $180,000. Matt hired around 5 more people to do sales with my dad, 3 people for reception, and even hired some people from Wall Street to help with the trading. The hardest part to convey about this whole situation is that everyone thought it was legitimate, and when I say EVERYONE was convinced I mean EVERYONE. Police officers, fraud investigators, everyone believed it was real & invested. Back to the main story, it is now 2017 and we have a nice house, a Lamborghini, a Mercedes S550, an Audi R8, and a Porsche Cayenne. Life was going good but with the stress of how massive the company was getting in such short of time my dad planned for a nice March break vacation in Mexico. So March break comes around and we leave for Mexico, 2 days after being there my dad gets a phone call from Matt saying "The police just raided the office, I don't know what's going on but it'll be fine. I'm heading down to the police station to figure it out." Instantly we were all panicked, sitting & waiting for a call back. Several minutes afterwards my dad gets another phone call from a detective who we'll call "David." David tells my dad that Matt has been taken into custody and that they had been investigating Matt's company for several months on the suspicion of fraud, and that he will be arrested when he returned to Canada as well. Obviously shocked & confused my dad continues talking to David and they agree on a plan for my dad to turn himself in once we got back instead of the humiliation at the airport & in front of his family. We tried to enjoy our vacation & then our last day came and we were heading back to a world of chaos. The flight home was mostly silent and I could tell that my dad was scared, angry, confused. We land and slowly walk to the front of the airport, we stood at the front for about an hour just hugging each other, but we knew eventually we would have to leave. We knew we had to say our final goodbyes & walked away in opposite directions. That would be the last time I saw my father for the next 3 months. My dad turned himself in the next day and then began the fight for his innocence. They seized his bank accounts, took his cars & house away, anything they could take they did. They wanted to charge my dad with fraud & several counts of proceeds of crime over $5,000. *Now I just want to take a pause to state that my memory of these events are less clear (despite being more recent) because I was dealing with my own personal issues & harassment from people thanks to these events\* My dad had no money for a lawyer because his accounts were seized, but he managed to get a deal where he would pay them after the trial. Meanwhile for whatever reason Matt still had the office building despite & he was allowed to sell it and use the money to pay for his lawyer, which I think is fucking ridiculous. Matt acted like nothing was wrong, completely emotionless & without a single care of the situation that they were now in. We would visit my dad every Thursday and Matt always had the exact same visiting time so we'd always have to see him, I hated him, I do hate him. My dad was only supposed to be in jail for 2 weeks but they held him for 3 months. They let Matt out before my dad, and Matt was the one who was behind all of it. I was never involved with the court stuff, so I can't talk about that. Most of the time was spent dealing with threatening messages from people all over our city & province. My sister was even harassed at school by a TEACHER. My whole entire life I was able to deal with really hard situations but this whole thing broke me, I'm not the same & I'll never be the same again. I failed almost all my classes in school, my attendance was next to none, and nobody understood what was going on or what it was like. My whole life was destroyed. After 3 months it is now June 2017 my dad was finally released from jail & the only charge he got was one count of proceeds of crime over $5,000. It was amazing to finally have him back and it lifted a big weight off my chest, but now he had to deal with thousands of angry people who knew who he was & for the wrong reasons, and he had ZERO money because they took away everything. Zero money, $100,000 worth of lawyers fees, and no job... Who is going to hire someone with thousands of people who hate him? Luckily my step mom was able to help out and keep everything afloat while he found a new job & slowly we tried to get everything set back into order, but then another issue arose thanks to Matt. Matt decided to take money from people in the mafia & invest it for them, and when things went down they came to our doorstep. So they demanded to be paid at least half back by my dad by a certain date or else there would be consequences (which I'm sure you can put 2 & 2 together) because they couldn't find Matt. Eventually my dad found a job, gave the mob what they wanted so they'd leave us alone, and was able to start paying off his lawyers fees & start saving. So now we're in 2018-2019, people slowly realized that my dad was innocent & stopped hating him, but a lot of friendships were still permanently lost. The good thing was that people started turning their attention to Matt who is still going on about how everyone was going to get paid back, which neither I or anybody else believes. I briefly got to read the report on the whole investigation and they had seized about $20,000,000 in cash/cheques from Matt's office. The police said that they were going to use all the money/assets seized to pay everyone back their initial investment. They also said that they were going to use all the stuff they took from my dad to help pay back everyone, but it's been 2 years and nobody has been paid back & the police have just tried to push everything under the rug. My dad was completely fine with giving all the money he earned from working at the company back, they have all the bank records & can trace back to when the payments first began but they insisted on taking everything including his life savings from before he even started working for Matt & they took mine & my sister's college savings. Our lives are relatively normal now, although it'll never be the same. My dad has a good job and is just trying to put everything behind him. I've graduated from high school but since they took our college savings away I can't afford to go, but I'm working myself to save money. Matt was supposed to be convicted about a month ago & it was suspected he would go to jail for 15-20 years however his lawyer became a judge so they pushed back his sentencing another few months (of course), so he's still roaming free. I believe Matt is a sociopath, absolutely no regret or remorse for anything he's done. Matt also doesn't realize that there are people who want him dead & have put prices on his head both in the free world & in every prison. If I'm being honest, Matt will probably die but after everything we've been through I can say that I don't care what happens to him. It doesn't involve me or my dad or my family, it's his own issues that he caused. I know I may have jumped all over the place trying to explain this, I probably forgot a lot of details. I just want to move on from this whole situation and I feel like writing it all out best as I can might help. Whenever I think about it I realize that it truly is unbelievable and sounds like something out of a Hollywood movie, but it's my life & it's what I'm dealing with to this day. We thought Matt was our best friend, he was like an older brother to me & he literally ruined our lives, guess you never know who you can trust, right? P.S not looking for anyone's input on the situation so don't waste your time.
I am moving over next month (I know, perfect timing weather wise). Been doing lots of research as I plan to live as effectively as possible - by reducing time dealing with bureaucracy and reducing costs as much as possible without sacrificing too much convenience. Bank: Liv. Entire application process online, great app which tracks and visualizes your expenses while offering in-app discounts for e.g. cinema tickets. FOREX: Revolut to transfer forex at mid market rates. I haven't figured out yet if it makes sense to use the Revolut card in the UAE. Cell phone: Virgin - 50% discount on a year plan. Most reasonable pricing. Home internet - Etisalat family with a 35AED speed booster offer Paying bills: Dubai Now app. Apparently even allows for paying gas at the patrol station. Would be great if you'd all share your deals and tips/tools as well!
Tesla reduced the loss to $ 408 million in the second quarter of 2019
The manufacturer of electric vehicles Tesla has published reports for the second quarter of 2019, which ended June 30. Despite record sales of cars, financial results were worse than analysts' forecasts, The Wall Street Journal indicates. https://preview.redd.it/lkcfgc5g9lc31.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=e6f59a287f557076a4219d3c800519137421538b Revenue grew by 59% compared to the second quarter of 2018 and amounted to $ 6.35 billion. Analysts had expected revenue of $ 6.41 billion. Net loss was $ 408.3 million or $2.31 per share. A year earlier, the loss was $717.5 million or $ 4.22 per share. The adjusted loss was $ 1.12 per share. Analysts expected a loss of $ 0.35 per share. Tesla said it plans to return to profitability in the third quarter of 2019. In April-June, Tesla produced 87,048 cars and delivered 95,356 vehicles to customers, including 77,634 Model 3 cars. The volume of deliveries was a record for the company. In total, in the first six months of 2019, Tesla shipped approximately 158.2 thousand vehicles to customers. In a letter to shareholders, the head of Tesla Elon Musk wrote that the company adheres to the previous forecast for deliveries in 2019 - from 360 thousand to 400 thousand. By the end of the year, the company plans to produce 10 thousand Model 3 cars a week. Now the volume is seven thousand a week. The company owns $5 billion in its accounts. This is the highest amount in the history of Tesla. It includes $ 2.7 billion from the sale of shares and the issuance of bonds in May 2019. Free cash flow is $ 614 million. Tesla revised its capital spending forecast for 2019: now it is $ 1.5-2 billion instead of $ 2-2.5 billion. The company spends this money on its main projects, including the construction of Gigafactory in Shanghai, the development of Model Y cars and Tesla Semi, as well as expanding the network of charging stations.
